λοιμός G3061
plague or pestilence; a deadly epidemic disease; metaphorically, a troublesome or pestilent person
Literally an epidemic plague or pestilence, but also used as a harsh insult for a troublesome person—a 'pest.' Jesus lists plagues among the signs preceding the end (Luke 21:11). A prosecutor viciously calls Paul 'a plague' (Acts 24:5), meaning a pestilent troublemaker infecting the whole world with his teaching. Homer used it for literal plagues; Plato and others applied it to people who were social 'infections.' The coupling with famine (λιμός/λοιμός) was traditional in Greek literature from Homer onward.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The contrast between literal disease (Luke 21:11) and metaphorical insult (Acts 24:5) shows the word's flexibility. Terullus' accusation that Paul is 'a plague' treats the apostle as an infectious disease threatening Roman order. Classical usage encompassed the plague at Athens, plagues in Homer, and pestilent individuals. The traditional pairing of famine and plague appears in Jesus' apocalyptic discourse. All translations preserve the plague imagery clearly. 2×
