λᾰλ-ιά G2981
Speech, way of speaking, dialect; one's manner of talk that reveals origin, identity, or message.
A noun covering both the content and the manner of speech. Derived from λαλέω ('to speak'), λαλιά can mean 'speech' in general, a particular 'dialect' or accent that betrays one's regional identity, or the substance of what someone says. Peter's Galilean λαλιά gives him away in the high priest's courtyard (Matt 26:73; Mark 14:70)—his accent is unmistakable. In John's Gospel, Jesus distinguishes between his λαλιά (manner of speaking) and his λόγος (word/message), suggesting the hearers cannot even process his speech, let alone grasp his teaching (John 8:43). Spanish habla and German Rede both preserve this dual sense of speech-as-utterance and speech-as-dialect.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Speech, way of speaking, dialect or accent. Encompasses both the act of speaking and the distinctive manner that identifies the speaker. In Matt 26:73 and Mark 14:70, Peter's λαλιά—his Galilean accent—betrays his identity during Jesus' trial; Spanish habla and French langage capture the dialectal nuance. In John 4:42 the Samaritans say they believe no longer because of the woman's λαλιά but from hearing Jesus themselves—here the word means 'report' or 'testimony.' In John 8:43 Jesus asks why they cannot understand his λαλιά, distinguishing his manner of speech from his deeper λόγος. This range—from regional accent to spoken testimony to communicative style—forms a coherent semantic field around identifiable, characteristic speech. 4×
