they lightened (the ship), threw cargo overboard
Luke's detailed shipwreck narrative describes the crew's desperate measures to save the vessel. In Acts 27:38, after eating, 'they lightened the ship by throwing the wheat into the sea.' The verb means to make light, to reduce weight. Having already jettisoned the cargo and tackle, they now sacrifice their food supply—the wheat was likely part of the grain shipment from Egypt to Rome. This final lightening attempt shows how dire the situation had become.
Senses
1. sense 1 — As the storm reaches its climax, the crew takes increasingly desperate measures to keep the ship afloat. The imperfect tense suggests ongoing or repeated action—they kept lightening the vessel. Having already thrown overboard cargo and equipment (v. 18-19), they now sacrifice the precious wheat cargo. Spanish 'aligeraban' and French 'alléger' both capture the progressive lightening. This was the last resort before shipwreck became inevitable. 1×
