κοσμ-έω G2885
To adorn, beautify, or decorate; also to put in order, arrange, or make ready.
From the same root as kosmos ('order, world'), kosmeo carries a double meaning that reflects how the Greeks saw beauty as inseparable from good arrangement. Seven of its ten NT occurrences describe adorning — whether tombs of the prophets (Matt 23:29), the temple with beautiful stones (Luke 21:5), or the quiet adornment of a godly woman's character (1 Pet 3:5). Yet in three passages it means simply to put in order: the foolish virgins 'trimmed' their lamps (Matt 25:7), and a swept house is 'put in order' (Matt 12:44, Luke 11:25). German 'schmuecken' catches the ornamental sense, while Spanish 'arreglaron' points to the practical, preparatory meaning.
Senses
1. adorn, decorate — Adorning, beautifying, or embellishing — making something or someone attractive through decoration or ornament. The Pharisees 'adorn' the tombs of the prophets (Matt 23:29); the temple is 'adorned' with noble stones (Luke 21:5). Paul counsels women to adorn themselves with modesty (1 Tim 2:9), and Titus 2:10 urges slaves to 'adorn' the doctrine of God. Peter recalls how holy women of old 'adorned' themselves with a gentle spirit (1 Pet 3:5). Spanish 'adornada' and French 'orner' consistently render this sense of deliberate beautification. 7×

2. put in order, prepare — Putting in order, arranging, or making practically ready — emphasizing function over beauty. In Matt 25:7 the virgins 'trimmed' (ekosmēsan) their lamp wicks, a practical act of maintenance. In Matt 12:44 and Luke 11:25 the swept house is 'put in order' (kekosmēmenon), describing domestic tidiness rather than ornament. Spanish 'arreglaron' ('they arranged') captures this utilitarian register clearly, distinguishing it from mere decoration. 3×
