V-AIA-3S  |  3× in 1 sense
to cease, abate; to stop or grow calm, especially of wind or storms
This word describes the cessation or abating of natural phenomena, particularly wind and storms. The Gospels use it exclusively for the calming of storms when Jesus commands the wind and waves. In Matthew 14:32, the wind ceased when Jesus and Peter got into the boat. Mark 4:39 and 6:51 similarly describe the wind ceasing—the first after Jesus rebuked the storm with 'Peace! Be still!' and the second when he entered the boat during his walk on water. The immediate cessation demonstrates Jesus' authority over creation's chaotic forces.

Senses
1. sense 1 To cease, stop, or abate, specifically of wind and storms. All three occurrences describe the wind ceasing in Jesus' presence: Mark 4:39 after he rebuked the storm with 'Silence! Be still!'; Matthew 14:32 when Jesus and Peter entered the boat after Peter's water-walk; and Mark 6:51 when Jesus joined the disciples in the boat during the storm. The immediate cessation of the wind in each case reveals Jesus' divine authority over nature's threatening forces.
