V-RPM/P-VMS  |  2× in 1 sense
to whitewash, to plaster with lime
This verb means to coat or plaster with lime (κονία), producing a white surface. Jesus uses it in Matthew 23:27 to denounce the scribes and Pharisees: 'You are like whitewashed tombs (τάφοις κεκονιαμένοις), which outwardly appear beautiful but within are full of dead people's bones.' In Acts 23:3, Paul angrily tells the high priest 'God is going to strike you, you whitewashed wall (τοῖχε κεκονιαμένε)!'—rebuking hypocritical judgment. Both uses are metaphorical, depicting a beautiful exterior hiding corruption or hypocrisy within. The perfect passive participle in both cases emphasizes the completed state of being whitewashed.

Senses
1. sense 1 Matthew 23:27 uses the perfect passive participle: 'whitewashed tombs' (τάφοις κεκονιαμένοις) that are beautiful outside but full of death inside. Acts 23:3 has Paul's rebuke: 'whitewashed wall' (τοῖχε κεκονιαμένε) against the high priest's unjust command. The multilingual glosses preserve the participle: Spanish 'blanqueada/blanqueados,' English 'whitewashed,' French 'blanchi/blanchir.' Both passages use the image of superficial white coating concealing inner corruption.
