καταφῐλ-έω G2705
To kiss fervently or affectionately; an intensified form of phileo, indicating warmth or emotion.
Kataphileo is an intensified form of phileo (to love, to kiss), with the kata- prefix adding the force of thoroughness, warmth, or repetition -- to kiss fervently, tenderly, or repeatedly. Every NT occurrence marks a moment of deep emotion. The sinful woman at Simon's house 'did not cease kissing' Jesus' feet (Luke 7:38, 45). The father in the parable of the prodigal son falls on his neck and kisses him (Luke 15:20). Judas uses this same fervent kiss as his sign of betrayal -- a bitter irony that the gesture of deepest affection becomes the instrument of treachery (Matt 26:49; Mark 14:45). The Ephesian elders kiss Paul in tearful farewell (Acts 20:37). Spanish 'besar' and French 'embrasser' do not distinguish the intensity, but the Greek kata- prefix is unmistakable.
Senses
1. kiss fervently — To kiss warmly, fervently, or repeatedly -- an intensified form of phileo where the kata- prefix conveys thoroughness or emotional depth. Distinguished in classical Greek from a simple philein (kiss), kataphileo implies lingering, affectionate, or demonstrative kissing. Every NT instance is emotionally charged: the sinful woman's persistent kissing of Jesus' feet (Luke 7:38, 45), the father's embrace of the returning prodigal (Luke 15:20), the Ephesian elders' tearful farewell to Paul (Acts 20:37), and -- most hauntingly -- Judas's betrayal kiss, where the gesture of deepest affection becomes the signal for arrest (Matt 26:49; Mark 14:45). 6×
