To reconcile, restore from enmity to friendship; a key Pauline term for God's saving work in Christ.
Katallasso is one of the great theological words of the NT, meaning to change a relationship from hostility to harmony. Paul uses it to describe the heart of the gospel: while we were enemies, God reconciled us to himself through the death of his Son (Rom 5:10). In 2 Corinthians 5:18-19, God is the one 'who reconciled us to himself through Christ' and entrusted believers with 'the ministry of reconciliation.' The word also appears in the practical instruction for a separated wife to be reconciled to her husband (1 Cor 7:11). French 'reconcilier,' Spanish 'reconciliar,' and German 'versoehnen' all capture this movement from estrangement to restored relationship.
Senses
1. reconcile, restore to right relationship — To change from a state of enmity to one of friendship and restored relationship -- to reconcile. In classical Greek the word could mean to exchange money or settle accounts, but in the NT it becomes a premier theological term. Paul declares that God reconciled the world to himself in Christ (2 Cor 5:18-19), that believers were reconciled while still enemies (Rom 5:10), and applies the same verb to marital reconciliation (1 Cor 7:11). The kata- prefix gives the sense of thoroughness -- a complete transformation of the relational state from hostility to peace. 6×
