N-NFS  |  4× in 1 sense
Reconciliation; the restoration of a broken relationship, especially between God and humanity.
Denotes the dramatic change from enmity to friendship, from alienation to restored relationship. In Paul's theology, this is God's initiative: while we were enemies, God reconciled us to himself through Christ (Rom 5:11). The word carries rich overtones from its secular Greek usage in diplomacy and currency exchange -- a costly transaction that restores proper value. Paul speaks of both the personal gift of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:18-19) and its cosmic scope, as Israel's rejection meant reconciliation for the world (Rom 11:15). Every language reaches for its deepest relational vocabulary: Spanish 'reconciliacion,' French 'reconciliation,' German 'Versöhnung.'

Senses
1. sense 1 The restoration of relationship between God and sinful humanity, accomplished through Christ's atoning work. Paul develops this concept most fully in Romans 5:11 and 2 Corinthians 5:18-19, emphasizing that God is the initiating agent who reconciles the world to himself. In Romans 11:15, the term takes on a salvation-historical dimension: Israel's temporary hardening has meant reconciliation for the Gentile world. The uniform rendering across all translation traditions -- German 'Versöhnung,' French 'réconciliation' -- reflects a single, theologically precise concept without semantic variation in its NT usage.
