κατ-ᾰκολουθ-έω G2628
V-APA-NFP  |  2× in 1 sense
follow, accompany, go after someone closely, often as a disciple or attendant
This verb describes close following, often implying devotion or attention to detail. Luke 23:55 says the women 'who had followed (κατακολουθήσασαι) Jesus from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid.' Their faithful accompaniment from Galilee culminates in witnessing his burial, preparing them to become the first resurrection witnesses. In Acts 16:17, the slave girl with a spirit of divination 'followed (κατακολουθοῦσα) Paul and us, crying out,' her persistent following contrasting with the women's devotion—hers is spiritual harassment, not discipleship. The verb thus captures both devoted following and dogged pursuit.

Senses
1. sense 1 The two uses contrast devoted discipleship (Luke) with demonic pestering (Acts). Classical usage (LSJ) includes following after, obeying, emulating. Spanish 'seguir de cerca' (follow closely) and French 'suivre' (to follow) preserve the tracking sense. The women's following in Luke is part of their pattern of support and witness, positioning them to become apostles to the apostles. The girl's following in Acts is persistent but ultimately disruptive, prompting Paul to cast out the spirit. Both show following as an act charged with intent, whether reverent or troubling.
