V-PMA-3S  |  1× in 1 sense
to disqualify, deprive of a prize; to judge against or rob of reward
This verb combines 'judge' (brabeuō) with 'against' (kata), meaning to judge someone unworthy of a prize, to disqualify, or to cheat someone of their reward. In Colossians 2:18, Paul warns, 'Let no one disqualify (katabrabeuetō) you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels.' The image is athletic: a judge ruling a competitor ineligible or denying them their rightful prize. Paul warns against false teachers who would declare believers unfit or inadequate unless they adopt extra-biblical practices—these judges have no authority to disqualify those whom Christ has declared righteous.

Senses
1. sense 1 Paul employs katabrabeuō to warn against false teachers acting as illegitimate judges. The Spanish 'prive-del-premio' (deprive-of-prize) and German 'betruegen' (cheat) both capture the wrongful denial. The false teachers in Colossae promoted mystical visions, angel worship, and harsh asceticism, implying that ordinary faith was insufficient. Paul rejects their authority: they cannot disqualify believers whom Christ has qualified. Salvation and standing before God depend on Christ alone, not on visions, angelic intermediaries, or self-imposed regulations.
