καλλῐ-έλαιος G2565
cultivated olive tree; the domesticated olive as opposed to wild olive
This noun designates the cultivated or garden olive tree, in contrast to the wild olive (agrielaios). In Romans 11:24, Paul describes Gentiles as branches from a wild olive grafted 'contrary to nature' into a cultivated olive tree (kallielaion). The metaphor is botanically backwards—normally one grafts cultivated stock onto wild rootstock, not the reverse. Paul's point is precisely the unnaturalness of Gentile inclusion: God has done something unexpected and gracious, grafting wild branches into Israel's cultivated tree to share in the 'rich root' of the patriarchs.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Paul employs kallielaios to highlight the superiority of Israel's covenant position—the cultivated, tended tree into which wild Gentiles are grafted. The Spanish 'buen-olivo' (good-olive) and French 'olivier-franc' (true-olive) both convey the domesticated quality. The unnatural graft warns Gentile Christians against arrogance: they have been included by grace, not merit, into a tree they did not plant. If natural branches (Israel) were broken off, grafted-in branches should not presume on their position but continue in faith and humility. 1×
