newness, freshness, the quality of being new in character or condition
This term captures the transformative quality of new life in Christ. Paul uses it twice in Romans to describe the believer's new way of existence. We are baptized into Christ's death so that we might 'walk in newness of life' (6:4), and we are released from the law to 'serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code' (7:6). The word contrasts vividly with the old regime of sin, death, and law. It is not merely chronological newness but qualitative renewal—a fresh start grounded in resurrection power and the indwelling Spirit.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Both occurrences in Romans describe the character of Christian existence: newness of life (6:4) and newness of the Spirit (7:6). Classical usage (LSJ) includes freshness, novelty, even innovation. The Spanish 'novedad,' French 'nouveauté,' and German 'Neuheit' all convey the new-quality sense. Paul's theology of new creation finds linguistic expression here: believers are not merely reformed but reborn, participating in a fundamentally new order inaugurated by Christ's resurrection and sustained by the Spirit. 2×
