θώραξ G2382
Breastplate; a piece of defensive armor covering the chest, used literally and figuratively.
Originally denoting the bronze corslet of Greek warriors, this noun describes armor protecting the chest and torso. Paul employs it metaphorically twice: the 'breastplate of righteousness' in the spiritual armor passage (Eph 6:14) and the 'breastplate of faith and love' (1 Thess 5:8). In Revelation's apocalyptic visions, demonic locusts wear breastplates like iron (Rev 9:9), and the cavalry from the Euphrates bear breastplates of fiery red, blue, and sulfurous yellow (Rev 9:17). Spanish 'coraza,' French and German 'Brustpanzer' all preserve the concrete military imagery.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A breastplate or corslet—defensive armor worn over the chest. Used figuratively by Paul for spiritual protection: the 'breastplate of righteousness' (Eph 6:14) and the 'breastplate of faith and love' (1 Thess 5:8), drawing on Isaiah 59:17. Used literally in Revelation's visions of supernatural armies: the locust-creatures with iron-like breastplates (Rev 9:9) and the Euphrates cavalry with brilliantly colored breastplates (Rev 9:17). All major translations render it with military armor terminology. 5×
