Its most memorable appearances come during Peter's denial, where he stands warming himself by the charcoal fire in the high priest's courtyard (Mark 14:54, 67; John 18:18, 25). The repeated participle 'warming himself' becomes almost a refrain underscoring Peter's vulnerable proximity to danger. In James 2:16 the verb shifts to expose empty religion: telling someone 'be warmed and filled' without meeting their need is faith without works. Spanish 'calentándose/calentaos' and French 'se chauffer' consistently render the physical act of seeking warmth.
