thelema -- will, desire, purpose; what someone wishes, intends, or determines should happen
The neuter noun thelema ('will') expresses a person's desire, intention, or purpose -- and supremely the will of God. Derived from the verb thelo ('to wish, to will'), it appears 63 times in the New Testament and is theologically central: Jesus teaches his disciples to pray 'your will be done' (Matt 6:10), declares that only those who do the Father's will enter the kingdom (Matt 7:21), and in Gethsemane submits his own will to the Father's (Matt 26:42). Paul uses it for both God's salvific purpose (Eph 1:5, 9, 11) and human desires (Eph 2:3). Spanish voluntad, French volonte, and German Wille all converge on a single volitional concept.

Senses
1. will, desire, purpose The will, desire, or settled purpose of a person or of God, denoting what one wishes or intends to bring about. Theologically dominant in the Lord's Prayer ('your will be done,' Matt 6:10), in Jesus' criterion for discipleship ('whoever does the will of my Father,' Matt 7:21; 12:50), and in Paul's doctrine of divine purpose (Eph 1:5, 9, 11). The two-occurrence plural cluster ('wills/desires,' as in Eph 2:3) expresses the same semantic core applied to human cravings. Spanish voluntad, French volonte, and German Wille render it uniformly across all 63 occurrences. 63×
