1. will, desire, purpose — The will, desire, or purpose of a person or of God; what one wishes or intends to happen. The dominant cluster (61x singular) and the minor cluster (2x plural 'wills/wishes') both express the same semantic concept of volition and intention. The plural simply denotes multiple desires or acts of will rather than a categorically different meaning. Multilingual evidence confirms a single sense: spa 'voluntad / voluntades', hin 'iccha / icchaen', arb 'mashi'a / mashi'at', kor 'tteut / tteut-deul-eul', swa 'mapenzi' (identical form for both). Predominantly used of God's will in the NT (e.g., Matt 6:10 'thy will be done'), also of human desires (Eph 2:3 'desires of the flesh'). 63×
