V-ASP-3P  |  62× in 2 senses
To glorify or praise; actively ascribing glory to God, or being glorified and receiving divine honor — especially in Johannine theology.
A theologically central verb with two complementary movements: humans glorifying God, and God being glorified. In its active sense, it describes the response of praise — crowds glorifying God after healings (Matt 9:8; Mark 2:12; Luke 2:20), or believers honoring God through righteous conduct (Matt 5:16). Spanish "glorificar" and German "verherrlichen" both carry the full weight of rendering glory. The passive and divine-passive sense becomes especially prominent in John's Gospel, where Jesus speaks of being glorified through the cross (John 12:16, 23; 13:31-32) and of the mutual glorification between Father and Son (John 17:1, 4-5). French uses "glorifier" for both directions, but the Greek voice system and Johannine context make the distinction unmistakable.

Senses
1. glorify, praise actively To actively ascribe glory, honor, and praise to God or to another — the transitive sense of rendering glory. This dominant usage (43 occurrences) spans narrative responses to miracles (Matt 9:8; Mark 2:12; Luke 2:20), commands to glorify God (Matt 5:16; 1 Cor 6:20), and doxological declarations. Spanish consistently uses active forms like "glorificaban" and "glorificando," and German "verherrlichen" emphasizes the act of making glorious. 43×

2. be glorified, receive glory To be glorified, to receive glory, or to have one's glory revealed — the divine passive describing glory conferred rather than given. Central to Johannine theology, where Jesus is glorified through his death and resurrection (John 7:39; 12:16, 23; 13:31) and the Father and Son mutually glorify each other (John 17:1, 4-5). Spanish marks this with passive constructions like "es glorificado" and "fue glorificado." Also includes the ironic sense of human self-glorification (Matt 6:2) where honor is received from people rather than God. 19×
