διωγ-μός G1375
Persecution, hostile pursuit or systematic oppression on account of faith
Denotes hostile action directed against individuals or communities because of their religious commitment — ranging from social ostracism to organized violence. Jesus warns that persecution will accompany the word sown on rocky ground (Matt 13:21; Mark 4:17) and promises it as an inseparable companion to discipleship (Mark 10:30). Acts 8:1 records the great persecution that scattered the Jerusalem church after Stephen's death. Paul catalogues persecution among his apostolic sufferings (Rom 8:35; 2 Cor 12:10; 2 Tim 3:11), treating it as normative for faithful witness.
Senses
1. persecution — Hostile pursuit or systematic oppression directed against believers on account of their faith. Jesus teaches that persecution tests those who initially receive the word with joy (Matt 13:21; Mark 4:17) and accompanies the hundredfold reward of discipleship (Mark 10:30). The post-Pentecost church experienced it corporately (Acts 8:1; 13:50), and Paul lists it among the tribulations that cannot separate believers from Christ's love (Rom 8:35; 2 Cor 12:10; 2 Tim 3:11). Spanish 'persecución,' Korean '박해,' and Swahili 'mateso' converge on this single meaning. 10×
