to thirst, be thirsty — to experience physical need for water or metaphorical longing for spiritual fulfillment
Dipsao captures both the raw physical sensation of thirst and a profound spiritual metaphor. On the literal side, Jesus identifies himself with the thirsty in the parable of the sheep and goats — 'I was thirsty and you gave me drink' (Matt 25:35) — and cries 'I thirst' from the cross (John 19:28). On the metaphorical side, the Beatitudes promise that those who 'hunger and thirst for righteousness' will be satisfied (Matt 5:6), and Jesus declares that whoever drinks the water he gives 'will never thirst again' (John 4:14; 6:35). Revelation bookends this dual register: 'let the one who thirsts come' (Rev 21:6; 22:17). Spanish 'tener sed,' French 'avoir soif,' and German 'duersten' all preserve both the physical and figurative dimensions.

Senses
1. to thirst, be thirsty To experience thirst, either as a literal physiological need for water (Matt 25:35, 37, 42, 44; John 19:28; Rom 12:20; 1 Cor 4:11) or as a metaphor for deep spiritual longing and desire for God or righteousness (Matt 5:6; John 4:13-14; 6:35; 7:37; Rev 21:6; 22:17). Jesus' own cry 'I thirst' on the cross (John 19:28) resonates on both levels simultaneously. The metaphorical usage draws on prophetic precedent (Isa 55:1) and finds its eschatological resolution in Revelation's invitation to the thirsty. 16×
