διαπον-έω G1278
to be troubled, disturbed, or greatly annoyed; to be worn out with labor or vexation (passive)
This verb originally meant to work something out thoroughly, but in passive voice (as in both NT occurrences) it means to be worn out, troubled, or greatly disturbed. Acts uses it for opponents being disturbed by the apostles' teaching: the religious authorities 'greatly disturbed' by resurrection preaching (4:2), and Paul 'greatly annoyed' by a spirit-possessed girl's persistent following (16:18). The term suggests more than mild irritation—it indicates significant vexation or disturbance that compels action. Spanish 'disgustados' and 'indignándose' capture this sense of being provoked to displeasure or indignation, while the passive voice emphasizes the involuntary nature of the emotional response.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Both occurrences in Acts describe being provoked to action by disturbance: the Sadducees and temple authorities 'greatly disturbed' by resurrection teaching (Acts 4:2: Spanish 'disgustados'), and Paul 'greatly annoyed' by the slave girl's persistent proclamation (Acts 16:18: Spanish 'indignándose'). The passive voice indicates something external has worn down their patience and provoked strong reaction. 2×
