To cross over, pass through; to travel across a body of water or through a region.
Describes the act of crossing from one side to the other, especially traversing a body of water by boat. In classical Greek it could refer to passing through a city or even 'passing through life,' but the New Testament consistently uses it for physical transit across the Sea of Galilee or similar geographical crossings. Jesus crosses over by boat and arrives in his own town (Matt 9:1), and after the feeding of the five thousand the disciples cross to the land of Gennesaret (Matt 14:34; Mark 6:53). The only non-maritime use appears in Luke 16:26, where Abraham tells the rich man that a great chasm is fixed so that none can 'cross over' between paradise and torment. Spanish 'cruzar' and German 'hinüberfahren' both center on the spatial movement from one side to the other.

All Synoptic occurrences describe Galilean boat crossings: Jesus crosses to his own city (Matt 9:1), the disciples land at Gennesaret after crossing over (Matt 14:34; Mark 6:53), and crowds follow Jesus after he crosses (Mark 5:21). The one metaphorical use in Luke 16:26 describes the impassable chasm between Abraham's side and Hades—'those who wish to cross from here to you cannot.' The sailors in Acts 27:39 planned to run the ship ashore, another instance of transit across water.
