This verb means to grow old or age, describing the natural process of advancing in years and the physical changes that accompany aging. Classical Greek used it for both people and things that become old or obsolete. The New Testament uses it once literally and once metaphorically. Jesus prophesies to Peter that 'when you are old' (literally 'when you grow old') he will stretch out his hands and be led where he doesn't wish—a prediction of Peter's martyrdom (John 21:18). Hebrews uses it metaphorically: what God calls 'new' has made the first covenant 'old,' and what is growing old and aging is ready to vanish (Heb 8:13). Both uses involve transition toward an ending.
