N-GMS  |  6× in 1 sense
Torment, torture, anguish; the infliction or experience of severe pain as punishment.
Denotes the act or state of being tortured—severe pain deliberately inflicted as punishment or experienced as divine judgment. All six New Testament occurrences appear in Revelation, where the word describes the agonizing consequences of God's wrath upon the unrepentant. The scorpion-like locusts of the fifth trumpet inflict basanismos for five months (Rev 9:5), while the smoke of torment for idolaters rises forever (Rev 14:11). Babylon's luxurious self-indulgence is repaid with an equal measure of torment (Rev 18:7, 10). Spanish 'tormento,' French 'Qual,' and German 'Qual' all center on the idea of excruciating suffering, confirming a unified punitive-anguish sense.

Senses
1. sense 1 Severe anguish or torture, especially as divine punishment. In Revelation the word is used exclusively for eschatological torment: the demonic locusts inflict pain like a scorpion's sting for five months (Rev 9:5), the worshippers of the beast face unending torment whose smoke ascends forever (Rev 14:11), and Babylon receives torment proportional to her self-glorification (Rev 18:7, 10). Spanish 'tormento' and German 'Qual' both convey intense, punitive suffering, confirming a single semantic core of agonizing retribution.
