N-AFS  |  7× in 1 sense
Occasion, opportunity, or base of operations; a starting point that enables or provokes action.
Denotes a starting point or foothold from which further action proceeds. In classical Greek it referred to a military base of operations, but in the New Testament it takes on a moral and relational sense: the foothold that sin exploits through the commandment (Rom 7:8, 11), or the occasion for boasting or criticism in community disputes (2 Cor 5:12; 11:12). Spanish 'ocasión,' French 'occasion,' and German 'Anlass' all preserve the notion of a precipitating opportunity rather than a mere moment in time. Paul's repeated use in Romans 7 vividly personifies sin as an adversary seizing a strategic position.

Senses
1. sense 1 An occasion, opportunity, or foothold—a starting point that enables or provokes further action. In Rom 7:8 and 7:11, sin seizes the commandment as its operational base (much like the classical military sense of a staging ground). In 2 Cor 5:12 and 11:12, Paul speaks of giving or denying others an 'occasion' for boasting or slander. The multilingual glosses (Spanish 'ocasión,' German 'Anlass,' French 'occasion') consistently point to a precipitating opportunity rather than a neutral time reference, confirming the active, causal nuance present in all seven occurrences.
