growth, increase in size or maturity
A noun denoting growth or increase. Paul describes the body of Christ growing through what every part supplies, making 'growth of the body' (Ephesians 4:16; Colossians 2:19). The term appears in botanical contexts in classical Greek for physical growth of plants or mathematical increments. Paul applies it metaphorically to the church's development toward maturity. The emphasis is on organic increase rather than mechanical addition.

Senses
1. sense 1 Both Pauline occurrences use identical phrasing about the body's growth (τὴν αὔξησιν τοῦ σώματος) in parallel passages about Christ as head and the church as body. Ephesians 4:16 emphasizes each part's contribution to growth. Colossians 2:19 stresses growth that comes from God. The biological metaphor of growth fits Paul's body imagery. French preserves the Greek term directly while other languages use native growth vocabulary, showing varying degrees of terminological standardization.
