V-ANP  |  2× in 1 sense
to separate, part from, be divided from
A verb describing separation or division. In Acts 15:39, it describes the sharp disagreement that separated Paul and Barnabas. In Revelation 6:14, the sky is split apart and separated like a scroll being rolled up. The passive voice indicates being separated by external forces or circumstances. Classical usage included separating wheat from chaff, setting things apart into categories, or vomiting (forcible separation).

Senses
1. sense 1 The two occurrences show different applications of separation: relational parting between co-workers (Acts 15:39) and cosmic splitting of the heavens (Rev 6:14). Both are passive - the separation happens to the subjects rather than being actively chosen. Multilingual evidence consistently uses separation vocabulary, with German and French both preserving forms of the Greek root, suggesting recognition of this as a technical term. The domain of Whole/Unite/Part/Divide aptly captures the semantic of unity being undone.
