V-APA-NMP  |  3× in 1 sense
escape, flee from, get away from danger or corruption
This verb means to flee from and successfully escape something dangerous or harmful. Peter uses it three times in his second epistle in the context of escaping worldly corruption. Believers have escaped the defilement of the world through knowing Christ (2 Pet 1:4). False teachers entice those barely 'escaping' from error (2:18). Most tragically, some who escaped defilement become re-entangled, making their latter state worse (2:20). The word emphasizes successful flight from danger, though that freedom can be lost.

Senses
1. sense 1 All three NT occurrences in 2 Peter describe escaping moral and spiritual corruption. Second Peter 1:4 celebrates divine promises enabling escape (ἀποφυγόντες) from worldly corruption through lust. Second Peter 2:18 describes false teachers enticing those barely 'escaping' (ἀποφεύγοντας) from error's way. Second Peter 2:20 warns of those who, 'having escaped' (ἀποφυγόντες) defilement through Christ's knowledge, become re-entangled. The German 'entfliehen' (flee away) captures the active distancing from danger that defines this term.
