to step off, disembark; to turn out, result in a certain outcome
This compound verb (apo + baino, 'step away from') carries both a physical and a resultative sense. Physically, it means to step off or disembark: in Luke 5:2 fishermen have gotten out of their boats, and in John 21:9 the disciples come ashore after the resurrection appearance. But Luke 21:13 uses it in a wholly different register — Jesus tells his persecuted followers that their trials 'will turn out' as an occasion for testimony. Philippians 1:19 echoes this: Paul is confident that his imprisonment 'will turn out' for deliverance. Spanish captures the split neatly: 'desembarcar' for the physical sense and 'resultar' for the outcome sense.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To step off, disembark, go ashore — the physical act of leaving a boat or vessel. Luke 5:2 describes fishermen who had gotten out of their boats to wash nets; John 21:9 narrates the disciples stepping ashore and finding a charcoal fire. Spanish 'desembarcaron' and French 'descendre' both point to this concrete, nautical meaning of disembarking. 4×
