Disobedient, rebellious, refusing to comply with divine or rightful authority
An adjective describing willful refusal to obey, especially toward God. It appears in contexts spanning the hopeful to the dire: in Luke 1:17, the angel promises that Elijah's spirit will turn 'the disobedient' to the wisdom of the just. Paul recounts his obedience to the heavenly vision by declaring he was 'not disobedient' (Acts 26:19). The vice lists of Romans 1:30, 2 Timothy 3:2, and Titus 1:16 include it among the marks of a depraved life. Spanish 'desobediente' and French 'desobeissant' directly mirror the Greek alpha-privative structure (a-peithes, 'un-persuadable').
