Deny, disown, renounce — to repudiate association with someone, especially Christ; also to deny oneself
The verb ἀπαρνέομαι (aparneomai) carries a stronger force than simple ἀρνέομαι, adding the prefix ἀπο- to intensify the denial into a complete disowning. It is forever linked with Peter's threefold denial of Jesus (Matt 26:34-35, 75; Mark 14:30-31, 72; Luke 22:34, 61), which Jesus predicted at the Last Supper. Yet the same verb also appears in the call to discipleship: 'Let him deny himself and take up his cross' (Matt 16:24; Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23). The word thus spans the spectrum from faithless abandonment to radical self-surrender. Spanish 'negar' serves for both senses, as does French 'renier.'
