V-ASP-3S  |  3× in 1 sense
take away, remove; to lift off and carry away
This verb means to lift something off and carry it away, resulting in its removal. Jesus uses it in all three Synoptic accounts of the bridegroom saying: when the bridegroom 'is taken away,' then the disciples will fast (Matt 9:15; Mark 2:20; Luke 5:35). The passive voice emphasizes that the removal happens to the bridegroom—foreshadowing Jesus's passion. The image is of forcible removal, a sudden taking that leaves absence and mourning in its wake.

Senses
1. sense 1 Appears exclusively in Jesus's teaching about the bridegroom being 'taken away' (ἀπαρθῇ). This passive aorist subjunctive occurs identically in all three Synoptic versions (Matt 9:15; Mark 2:20; Luke 5:35), predicting a violent removal that will inaugurate a season of fasting. The Spanish 'sea-quitado' (be taken away), French 'ôter' (remove), and German forms all convey the forcible separation. This foreshadows the crucifixion when the bridegroom would indeed be violently removed from the wedding guests.
