1. oppose / be an adversary — To be set against, to oppose, to be an adversary; used as a middle/passive deponent with active meaning throughout the NT. In Luke 13:17 and 21:15 the 'ones opposing' (ἀντικείμενοι) Christ or his disciples are confounded. In 1 Cor 16:9 many 'adversaries' (ἀντικείμενοι) hinder the open door. In Gal 5:17 flesh and Spirit 'are opposed' (ἀντίκειται) to each other. In 2 Thess 2:4 the man of lawlessness 'opposes' (ἀντικείμενος) all that is called God. In 1 Tim 1:10 whatever 'is opposed' (ἀντίκειται) to sound teaching. In 1 Tim 5:14 the 'adversary' (ἀντικειμένῳ) is given no occasion for reproach.
