ἀναπληρ-όω G0378
To fill up, fulfill, complete, or supply what is lacking
A compound verb (ana + pleroo) meaning to fill up what is deficient or bring something to full completion. Its range spans prophetic fulfillment to practical supply. In Matthew 13:14, Isaiah's prophecy 'is fulfilled' (anapleroutai) in the people's hardness of hearing. Paul uses it concretely when Stephanas's household 'supplied' what was lacking from the Corinthians' absence (1 Cor 16:17), and theologically when believers 'fulfill' the law of Christ by bearing one another's burdens (Gal 6:2). Philippians 2:30 praises Epaphroditus for filling up the gap in the Philippians' service.
Senses
1. fill up, fulfill, complete — To fill up a deficiency, fulfill a prophecy, or complete what is incomplete. The verb carries an inherent sense of making whole what was partial. In Matthew 13:14 it denotes prophetic fulfillment -- Spanish 'cumplireis' pointing to completion of Scripture. In 1 Corinthians 14:16 one 'fills the place' of the outsider, while 1 Corinthians 16:17 uses it for supplying a personal absence -- Spanish 'colmar' (to fill to the brim). Galatians 6:2 applies it to mutual burden-bearing as fulfillment of Christ's law. Philippians 2:30 praises Epaphroditus for filling up what was lacking in the Philippians' service, showing the concrete social dimension. 6×
