ἀνάπηρ-ος G0376
crippled, maimed, lame, physically disabled or mutilated
This adjective describes those who are physically maimed, crippled, or disabled. Both occurrences appear in Luke's Gospel in Jesus' teaching about banquet hospitality. Luke 14:13 instructs that when giving a feast, invite the poor, crippled (ἀναπείρους), lame, and blind. Verse 21 depicts the master commanding his servant to bring in τοὺς ἀναπείρους—the crippled—along with the poor, blind, and lame from streets and lanes. Jesus radically redefines hospitality: rather than inviting those who can reciprocate, invite those who cannot repay, including the physically disabled.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The disability is consistent: Spanish 'lisiados' (crippled) and 'a lisiados,' French 'estropié' (maimed), German preserving the Greek. Both verses belong to the same parable contrasting worldly reciprocity-based hospitality with kingdom generosity toward the marginalized. The crippled represent those excluded from conventional social gatherings but specifically included in God's kingdom feast, illustrating grace extended to those unable to earn or repay it. 2×
