to clothe, dress; to put garments on someone
An older, somewhat literary verb for dressing or clothing someone, used in the NT exclusively by Jesus in two parallel sayings about God's providential care. In Matthew 6:30 and Luke 12:28, Jesus argues from lesser to greater: if God so clothes the grass of the field, how much more will he clothe his followers? Matthew 11:8 and Luke 7:25 use the perfect passive participle to describe someone 'dressed in' fine garments, contrasting John the Baptist's rough attire with courtly luxury.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To put clothing on someone, to dress or array a person or thing in garments. French 'vetir' and Spanish 'vestir' both derive from Latin vestire, capturing the same basic action. The active forms in Matt 6:30 and Luke 12:28 describe God clothing the grass with splendor; the passive participle in Matt 11:8 and Luke 7:25 depicts a person dressed in luxurious garments, contrasting with the ascetic simplicity of the Baptist. 4×
