This verb means to grind grain, typically using millstones to produce flour. Both occurrences appear in Jesus' eschatological discourse describing daily activities interrupted by the coming of the Son of Man: two women will be ἀλήθουσαι—grinding at the mill—and one will be taken, the other left (Matthew 24:41; Luke 17:35). Grinding grain was daily women's work in ancient households, usually done with hand mills in the early morning. Jesus uses this ordinary domestic task to illustrate how his return will come unexpectedly during normal life activities.
