Tahpanhes: an Egyptian border city in the eastern Nile Delta where Judean refugees fled after the destruction of Jerusalem.
The name of an Egyptian frontier city, identified with ancient Daphne (modern Tell Defenneh), situated in the eastern Nile Delta about eighteen miles southeast of Tanis. Tahpanhes appears almost exclusively in Jeremiah's prophecies as a destination of Judean refugees who fled to Egypt against prophetic warning after the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC. Jeremiah himself was taken there (Jer 43:7-9) and prophesied that Nebuchadnezzar would set his throne at its very gates (Jer 43:8-13). The city also appears in Jeremiah 2:16, where its inhabitants are said to have 'shaved the crown of your head,' and in Ezekiel 30:18, which prophesies its darkening under divine judgment.

Senses
1. Tahpanhes (Egyptian city) The proper noun Tahpanhes (תַּחְפַּנְחֵס), also spelled Tehaphnehes (תְּחַפְנְחֵס in Ezek 30:18), designating an Egyptian border fortress in the northeastern Delta, corresponding to Greek Daphnae. The city served as a military garrison and entry point into Egypt. Jeremiah 2:16 pairs it with Memphis (Noph) as representative of Egyptian power that would harm Israel. After Jerusalem's fall, fleeing Judeans settled there despite Jeremiah's protests (Jer 43:7), and the prophet performed a symbolic act of burying stones at its entrance to signify Nebuchadnezzar's coming conquest (Jer 43:8-9). Ezekiel 30:18 prophesies that the 'day will be dark at Tahpanhes' when God breaks Egypt's yoke. Translations vary in spelling—English 'Tahpanhes/Tachpanhes,' Spanish 'Tajpanjés,' French 'Tachpanès'—but all identify it as the same Egyptian locale.
