Outgoing or extremity of a boundary; escape or deliverance from death; source or wellspring of life
Totsaot (always plural) draws on the root yatsa' (to go out) to mark the point where something exits or terminates. In its dominant usage across Numbers 34 and Joshua 15-19, it names the terminal points of tribal boundary lines -- where a border 'goes out' to its end. Psalm 68:20 lifts the word into theology: to the Lord belong 'the exits from death,' i.e., deliverance when all escape seems impossible. Proverbs 4:23 offers a striking metaphorical turn: the heart is the source from which flow 'the springs of life.' Spanish 'salidas' (exits) unifies these senses elegantly.

Senses
1. outgoing, extremity, border The outgoing or terminal point of a territorial boundary, used extensively in land-allotment descriptions. Numbers 34:4-12 traces Canaan's borders by their totsaot, and Joshua 15-19 maps each tribe's inheritance the same way. The plural form and construct chains ('its goings-out') mark geographic endpoints. Spanish 'sus salidas' and French 'ses sorties' both convey the sense of where a boundary line exits. 23×

2. escape, deliverance from death Escape or deliverance from death, used uniquely in Psalm 68:20 (Hebrew v. 21): 'To God the Lord belong the exits from death.' Here the boundary metaphor is transposed into the realm of mortality -- God controls the passages out of death's domain. Spanish 'salidas' and English 'escapes' both capture this theological shift from geography to salvation.

3. source, spring, wellspring Source, spring, or wellspring, used metaphorically in Proverbs 4:23: 'Guard your heart, for from it are the totsaot of life.' The direction reverses -- not where something terminates but where it originates. The heart is the fountainhead from which life's currents flow outward. Some scholars emend to motsa'ot, but the Masoretic text stands as a powerful image of inner origin.
