Warp: the lengthwise threads set in a loom through which the woof is woven crosswise.
A technical weaving term denoting the set of threads stretched lengthwise on a loom, forming the fixed framework through which the crosswise woof (ereb) is interlaced. All nine occurrences appear in Leviticus 13:48-59, within the priestly regulations for diagnosing and treating textile contamination (tsara'at). The pairing with 'ereb' (woof) in every instance shows that Israelite priests needed precise textile vocabulary to examine garments fiber by fiber. Spanish 'urdimbre' and English 'warp' both preserve this ancient loom-technology distinction.
Senses
1. in the warp — The warp of a loom — the vertical, pre-set threads through which the shuttle carrying the woof passes horizontally. Exclusively found in the Levitical purity legislation of Lev 13:48-59, where a priest inspects whether a leprous mark has spread 'in the warp or in the woof' of linen or wool garments. The consistent multilingual rendering (Spanish 'urdimbre,' French 'chaîne du tissu') confirms the concrete, technical textile meaning with no metaphorical extension in the biblical corpus. 9×
