Aramaic verb: to loosen, untie, solve (problems); to dwell, abide; to begin, commence
An Aramaic verb with a surprisingly wide semantic range, all arguably traceable to the root idea of loosening or releasing. Literally, the three men in the furnace are found 'loosed' from their bonds, walking freely in the fire (Dan 3:25). Figuratively, Daniel's gift for 'loosening knots' -- solving intractable riddles -- makes him indispensable to the Babylonian court (Dan 5:12, 16). The sense of 'dwelling' likely derives from the traveler's act of loosening pack-straps when making camp (Dan 2:22). In Ezra 5:2 the Piel yields 'began,' perhaps from the idea of loosening restraints to set an enterprise in motion.
