Onycha, an aromatic ingredient in the holy incense, possibly from mollusk opercula
God's instructions for tabernacle worship included a specialized incense recipe, one component being this mysterious substance. Traditional identification points to onycha—the 'fingernail' or operculum of certain mollusks, which when burned produces a pungent aromatic smoke. Ancient Near Eastern perfumery employed various exotic materials, and shell-derived aromatics were valued. The Hebrew name may relate to a root for blackness, perhaps describing the darkened state of the processed operculum. Incense-making was both science and sacred art.

Senses
1. sense 1 Found in Exodus 30:34 among four ingredients for the sanctuary incense. Listed alongside stacte and galbanum, onycha contributes to the complex aromatic profile reserved exclusively for worship. Ancient versions (Greek onyx, Latin onycha) support the mollusk-operculum identification, though one scholar proposes amber as an alternative. Spanish 'ónica' and German 'Muschel' (shell/mussel) follow the traditional understanding. The rarity of the term matches the exclusivity of the holy incense formula.
