Prep-b  |  11× in 1 sense
A whip or scourge, used literally of punishment and figuratively of divine judgment and calamity
Denotes the instrument of beating — a lash, whip, or scourge — deployed in contexts of both human cruelty and divine discipline. Rehoboam's infamous threat to discipline Israel with scorpions rather than his father's whips marks the political rupture of the kingdom (1 Kgs 12:11, 14). Job's friend Eliphaz speaks of being hidden from 'the scourge of the tongue' (Job 5:21), extending the image to verbal attack. Isaiah envisions the LORD wielding a scourge against Assyria as he once struck Egypt at the Sea (Isa 10:26; 28:15, 18). The word thus bridges physical punishment and cosmic judgment.

Senses
1. whip, scourge A whip or scourge used for inflicting punishment, appearing both literally and metaphorically. Literally, it denotes the instrument of discipline — Rehoboam threatens heavier whips than Solomon's (1 Kgs 12:11, 14). Metaphorically, Job 5:21 speaks of the 'scourge of the tongue,' while Isaiah pictures God wielding a scourge against oppressors (Isa 10:26; 28:15, 18). Nahum 3:2 evokes the crack of the whip in battle. Arabic سَوْط (sawt, whip), Spanish 'látigo/azote,' Korean 채찍 (chaejjik), and Hindi कोड़ा (kora) all converge on a single instrument of striking, with no semantic distinction between literal and figurative uses in the lexicon. 11×
