Shaddai ('the Almighty') is an ancient divine name or epithet for God whose etymology remains debated -- proposals range from shadad ('to overpower'), to shadah ('to pour forth,' as rain-giver), to shed ('lord, sovereign'). The Septuagint renders it pantokrator ('all-powerful') and the Vulgate omnipotens ('almighty'). Its 48 occurrences concentrate in two main literary settings: the patriarchal narratives, where God identifies himself as El Shaddai in covenant contexts (Gen 17:1; 28:3; 35:11; 43:14; 48:3; Exod 6:3), and the Book of Job, where Shaddai is the preferred divine designation in the poetic dialogues (Job 5:17; 6:4, 14; 8:3, 5; 11:7; and many more). A handful of occurrences appear in prophetic poetry (Isa 13:6; Ezek 1:24; Joel 1:15) and in Balaam's oracles (Num 24:4, 16), where the seer 'sees the vision of Shaddai.' The name carries connotations of supreme power, cosmic authority, and covenantal faithfulness.
