Los hablantes de hebreo no concebían el Seol como un lugar de castigo únicamente; tanto justos como impíos descienden allí. Jacob se lamenta de que bajará al Seol llorando por José (Gn 37:35), y el salmista agradece a Dios por rescatar su alma de sus profundidades más bajas (Sal 86:13). La etimología podría conectarse con שָׁאַל ('preguntar, inquirir'), posiblemente en referencia a la nigromancia. En un pasaje disputado (Is 7:11), la forma podría ser en realidad el imperativo del verbo «pedir» en lugar del sustantivo Seol, cuando se le dice a Acaz que pida una señal del Señor.
