1. give rest, be at rest To be at rest or to cause to rest; in Hifil causative 'give rest to' and intransitive 'find rest,' and in Niphal 'be still, be at rest.' Used of physical repose and cessation of turmoil. Cognate Arabic raja'a 'return (to rest).' Cf. Isa 34:14 'the night creature shall rest there,' Jer 31:2 'to give rest to him,' Jer 50:34 'he may give rest to the land,' Deut 28:65 'you shall not rest,' Jer 47:6 'be still.'
