To grow great, become large (Qal intransitive); to make great, magnify, exalt (Piel causative) -- Aramaic
This Aramaic verb, cognate to the common Hebrew rabah, appears exclusively in the book of Daniel. In its Qal stem it describes organic, often dramatic growth: the great tree in Nebuchadnezzar's dream that 'grew and became strong' until it reached the heavens (Dan 4:11, 20), and the king's own hair that 'grew long' like eagle feathers during his humiliation (Dan 4:33). The single Piel occurrence shifts to causative action -- the king 'made Daniel great' with honors and gifts (Dan 2:48). Spanish tracks the distinction cleanly: 'crecer' for intransitive growth, 'engrandecer' for active magnification.

Senses
1. to grow, become great (Qal intransitive) To grow, become great or large (Qal intransitive). Used of the cosmic tree in Nebuchadnezzar's dream growing tall and mighty (Dan 4:11, 20), of the king's own greatness expanding (Dan 4:22), and of his hair growing wild during his bestial exile (Dan 4:33). Spanish 'crecer/ha crecido' and English 'grew/has grown' consistently render the organic, intransitive growth.

2. to make great, magnify (Piel causative) To make great, magnify, or exalt someone (Piel causative). Appears once in Daniel 2:48 where the king 'made Daniel great' (rabbi) by elevating him with gifts and authority over Babylon. Spanish 'engrandecer' precisely captures the factitive sense -- causing greatness in another -- distinguishing it sharply from the intransitive growth of the Qal.
