El sustantivo קוֹץ (qots) designa espinos o zarzas, una de las imágenes botánicas más versátiles de las Escrituras. Su aparición fundacional está en la maldición primordial: «espinos y cardos te producirá» (Gn 3:18), estableciendo los espinos como signo de la rebelión de la tierra.
