To feel loathing, deep disgust, or self-abhorrence; in Hitpael, to contend with or strive against
This verb captures visceral revulsion at its core. In Psalm 95:10, God declares 'I loathed that generation' -- a forty-year disgust with a wayward people. Ezekiel deploys the Niphal reflexively: Israel will 'loathe themselves' in their own sight when they remember their abominations (Ezek 6:9; 20:43; 36:31). The Hitpael intensifies the emotion into active contention: the psalmist in 119:158 is revolted by the faithless, and in 139:21 he 'contends with' those who rise against God. Spanish splits the range helpfully -- 'fastidio' and 'aborrecer' for loathing, 'contender' for the combative extension.
Senses
1. loathe, feel disgust — To feel deep loathing, revulsion, or self-abhorrence. The Qal in Psalm 95:10 expresses God's forty-year disgust with a generation. The Niphal in Ezekiel is reflexive: the people will loathe themselves at their own faces (Ezek 20:43; 36:31; 6:9). Spanish 'sentir fastidio' and 'aborrecerse' capture the visceral, inward-turning nature of this disgust. 4×

2. contend with, struggle against — To contend with, strive against, or quarrel (Hitpael intensification). Psalm 119:158 describes disgust that spills over into active opposition toward the faithless, and Psalm 139:21 directs this combative loathing at those who hate God. Spanish 'contender' and the shift from passive revulsion to hostile engagement mark this as a semantic extension of the core loathing sense. 2×
