Zoan — ancient Egyptian city (Tanis) in the Nile Delta, seat of Pharaoh's court
The Hebrew name for the ancient Egyptian city of Tanis (Greek), located in the northeastern Nile Delta. Scripture remembers it as the place where God performed wonders before Pharaoh (Ps 78:12, 43) and as a seat of Egyptian power whose counselors Isaiah mocks as fools (Isa 19:11, 13; 30:4). Numbers 13:22 notes that Hebron was built seven years before Zoan, using it as a chronological benchmark for great antiquity. The modern site is San el-Hagar in Egypt.
